"ACTIVE SHOOTER" DRILL AT HIGH SCHOOL
On Wednesday April 2, 2008 an
"active shooter" drill was conducted at the Ocean Township High School.
The planned drill was coordinated by the Ocean Township Police Department,
the Ocean Township School District and the Monmouth County Emergency
Response Team. Other agencies present included the New Jersey State
Police, the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, the Monmouth County Fire
Marshall's Office, the Office Of Emergency Management, the Oakhurst Fire
Department and the Oakhurst First Aid Squad.
The purpose of the drill was to deploy a full scale
response to an active shooter scenario in an occupied school. The
drill commenced with an "armed intruder" entering the school who later took
a class "hostage". Subsequent responses included school lockdown,
patrol response, containment, evacuation, negotiations, suspect engagement
and arrest. Issues including but not limited to scene security, Mobile
Command establishment, First Aid rescue and fire suppression were some of
the many "behind the scenes" operations that also unfolded.
Below are a few photos of the event in the briefing,
execution and resolution phases.
