NARRATIVE
On 1/25/2008 at approximately 9:00 pm, police were notified by Monmouth
Medical Center staff that a 17-year-old male from Ocean Township was being
treated for a wound to his leg that was the result of being shot by a pellet
or BB gun. Detective Sergeant Thomas Burke then launched an investigation
into the incident. He determined that 17-year-old victim was attending a
birthday party for a friend at a Jerome Ave residence. One of the
partygoers, a 17-year-old male also of Ocean Township, who is also a friend
of the victim, apparently was playing with an air-propelled pellet rifle
inside the home. At some point, the 17-year-old became careless with the
rifle and shot the victim in the leg. The pellet lodged itself in the
victim’s leg and he required medical treatment. The 17-year-old was later
taken into custody by Burke and Detective Patrick Martin. He was charged
with Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Weapon. He was later taken to
the Monmouth County Youth Detention Center. He was released to his parents
later in the day from the Youth Detention Center.
