The Township of Ocean and Village of Loch Arbour
Municipal Court
The Municipal Court is a quasi-criminal court of limited jurisdiction that is under the supervision of the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC).
The judicial staff of the Municipal Court are employees of the Township of Ocean but are governed by the rules of the court as determined by the State of NJ Supreme Court.
The original jurisdiction of all motor vehicle and criminal complaints is the Municipal Court. The Court hears non-indictable cases such as disorderly persons offenses, Township ordinances, S.P.C.A. violations, Weights & Measures infractions, as well as all motor vehicle summonses including D.W.I. violations.
Although more serious indictable complaints begin in the Municipal Court, they are forwarded to the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office for disposition or remand. Domestic violence complaints are subsequently transferred to the Family Division of the Superior Court. You may contact either of these agencies by calling 732-677-4300.
The Township of Ocean Complaint Resolution Committee is staffed by four (4) mediators who are volunteers trained by the A.O.C. The function of the mediators is to resolve neighborhood disputes of a non-violent nature and bring all parties concerned to an amicable agreement allowing the Judge to dismiss the court action. All cases that fall under the jurisdiction of the Municipal Court are adjudicated by the Judge.
