FOCuS - Family Oriented Change Strategies

FOCuS provides an opportunity for parents to learn new and effective methods of helping children of all ages to change their behavior. Based on a positive approach to discipline and communication, the program builds on the framework developed by Dr. Thomas Phelan as outlined in his book 1-2-3 Magic.

This hopeful and helpful change strategy will help families respond to the discipline challenges and promote success of children of all ages. Sessions are divided according to stage of development.

FOCuS-1 - Grades 1-4.

Addresses your child’s challenging behaviors at home and school including:
  • Aggressive behaviors
  • Difficulty following instruction
  • Opposition and defiance
  • Lying or stealing
Learn to promote positive behavior. Learn to promote positive behaviors with clear and consistent communication.

FOCuS-2 - Grades 5-8.

Addresses your child’s challenging behavior in home, school or community.

Learn how to address challenges such as:
  • Lying
  • Opposition and defiance
  • Academic underachievement
  • School misbehavior
  • Bullying
  • Negative friends
  • High risk behaviors
Learn positive communication and limit setting that empowers parents and engages youth.

FOCuS-3 - Grades 9-12.

Addresses challenging behaviors of youth as they continue to develop autonomy and responsibility.

Learn strategies for changing negative behaviors such as:
  • Shoplifting and stealing
  • Opposition and defiance
  • Aggression and hostility
  • Academic disruption and failure
  • Negative peer group


  • FOCuS --Family Oriented Change Strategies assists parents in developing new skills so that children can learn new behaviors. Applying the work of Dr. Thomas Phelan and principles of positive psychology, the program is: 
  • Practical – providing real solutions for real problems. 
  • Age appropriate - providing three levels to address needs of different ages. 
  • Efficient – One two hour session will introduce concepts that will bring immediate results. 
  • Effective – Research has shown the strategies to be effective in addressing challenging behavior in children of all ages. 
  • Down to Earth – This common sense approach is easily understood and applied in the family.
